The project started in October 2018. Aquafin needed to monitor and improve the energy management of 300 water treatment plants consuming 300 GWh of electricity, the equivalent of 75.000 families.

The Objectives

  • Reduce yearly electricity consumption by 1%
  • PV installations to produce 30MW/year by 2025
  • Include more green electricity (such as PV and biogas)
  • Become climate neutral

The Strategy

The project aimed at optimising energy management in three ways:

  1. Identification of under-performing plants: by monitoring the energy consumption, the goal was to get insight of the electricity usage and to identify the sites that consume the most (benchmarking); at the same time, they found correlation between sites consumption and the volume of waste extracted from water as well between consumption and precipitations.
  2. Monitoring local energy production: on some plants Aquafin installed cogeneration systems and solar systems to produce energy. The energy generated is monitored on Energis.Cloud and benchmarked for the different sites. The monitoring of both, energy consumption and production, allows Aquafin to optimise energy usage, by maximising the use of electricity produced locally.
  1. Optimisation of energy usage through sub-metering : thanks to such advanced analysis, Aquafin has access to the details of electricity consumption and energy usage per technical installation (such as mixer, blower…) and can identify underperforming assets and overconsumption easily.

THE SOLUTION

The data is collected automatically from Fluvius, EDF Luminus and weather services as well as from Huawei and Fronius inverters.
These data are combined with manually collected data. From these data, a number of KPIs are computed and visualised on
dashboards to analyse consumption and production.
Reports are as well generated periodically to inform management about the efficiency of plants, the optimisation opportunities identified, the energy saved and the financial achievements.

Benchmarking of multiple sites organised by area

Aquafin counts with several hundred water treatment plants. Being able to benchmark them according to their energy usage
allows them to identify easily underperforming assets and savings opportunities.

Understanding what influences consumption through linear regression

The monitoring system allows to have a better understanding of the energy usage. For example, it was observed that a correlation
existed between energy consumption and precipitations: the more it rains the more energy is needed to pump out the extra
water. This opens optimisation opportunities: for example, it is possible to forecast consumption and decide to use cogeneration
production accordingly.

About Aquafin

Aquafin was established by the Flemish Region (Belgium) in 1990, for the purpose of expanding, operating and pre-financing the wastewater treatment infrastructure in Flanders. Aquafin collects household wastewater from the municipal sewers in collector sewers and transports it to wastewater treatment plants, where it is treated in accordance with European and Flemish standards, before it is returned to nature.  As a result, the quality of watercourses has improved enormously.  The treated water isn’t of drinking water quality for humans, but it is just right for fish, birds and amphibians. Aquafin also uses their knowledge of the water cycle to have clean water in city centers, but also to guarantee a sustainable use of rainwater to prevent increased drying of soils or flooding after heavy rains.
